Home Game is unquestionably one of our favorite pregnancy/parenting books ever. It’s neither a medical text nor a step-by-step guide on how to be a better parent. Rather, it’s a touching, occasionally hilarious, often entertaining memoir of bestselling author Michael Lewis’ (Liars Poker, Moneyball, etc) experience raising his three children. Lewis decided to keep a written record of what actually happened immediately after the birth of his three children. Home Game is that record. And it’s freaking funny.
Consider Lewis’ sleepover at the Oakland version of Disney World, or the necessity of a mirror during a “Berkley childbirth.” Lewis jumps from anecdote to anecdote, taking liberty with time to gloss over the presumingly dull everyday realities of family life. He is honest & sincere and he is very, very funny – in a smart, sophisticated way (not a “I’m never going to have sex again” way).
Let’s be clear – this book in no way aims to educate about being a better parent. It is merely Lewis’ account of his experiences. Some readers may learn something along the way, others will not. What’s nice is that it’s not expected.
