Child of Mine, by Ellyn Satter, one of the foremost authorities on healthy eating for children, can pretty much be summed up in a few words “division of responsibility in feeding”. This means parents are responsible for what, when and where feeding occurs and children are responsible for how much and whether to eat. If you can get this down, you’ve pretty much gotten the whole 500+ page book. Satter goes on to describe how to do this at many different stages from infancy through early childhood, but it is rather repetitive for someone not in the field of nutrition. While there is a lot of good advice sprinkled throughout the book, I can’t really say her philosophy on dessert would fly with most of the parents I work with. She recommends offering your child dessert at the same time as the rest of the meal and letting him/her decide when to eat it. I mean seriously, would you wait until the end of the meal for dessert? I know I wouldn’t.
